Biocides Market by Type (Halogen, Metallic Compounds, Organosulfur Compounds), by Application (Water & Wastewater Treatment, Healthcare & Personal Care, Consumer Goods), by Region (North America, Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East and Africa, South America) – Global Forecast (2019 to 2027)

The Global Biocides Market is expected to register a CAGR of more than 4%, reaching a value of around USD 14.3 billion by the end of 2027.

The Biocides Directive defines biocidal products as products intended to destroy, render harmless, prevent the action of, or otherwise exert a controlling effect on any harmful organism by chemical or biological means. Biocides are classified as active substances and preparations to control organisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, insects, and animals. Certain examples of biocidal products include wood preservatives, repellents, rodenticides, and antifouling agents.

BIOCIDES MARKET: Drivers & Opportunities

Market Driver:

  • High Demand for Biocides in Water & Wastewater Treatment

Biocides are widely used for disinfection and biological control of water & wastewater treatment. Some of the biocides used in water & wastewater treatment include chlorine, chlorine dioxide, peracetic acid, and hydrogen peroxide, among others. With the rise in industrialization and urbanization, the demand for water & wastewater treatment is increasing. Growth of industries across the globe results in large volumes of wastewater effluent. Treatment of this effluent is important because it contains substances such as human waste, food scraps, oils, soaps, and toxic chemicals. If not properly treated, this water can have a negative impact on the environment, wildlife, as well as human life.

According to the United Nations Water, 80% of wastewater flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused, thereby resulting in 1.8 billion people to use it as a source of drinking water. Various government initiatives for providing suitable drinking water to the consumers such as the Clean Water Act and the European Drinking Directive promote the need for water & wastewater treatment.

Additionally, biocides are used in disinfection of cooling systems, cold water storage tanks, RO systems, and pools & spas, among others

Therefore, the need for water & wastewater treatment across the globe is expected to drive the global biocides market.

  • Use of Biocides in Personal Care and Healthcare Industry

Biocides are used to decontaminate the skin of patients and health professionals, any surfaces that could harbour bacteria, and any instruments in contact with patients. Biocides are also used as antiseptics to treat infections in mucous membranes and damaged skin. Cosmetic biocides are designed to cleanse the skin by inhibiting the growth of microorganisms in cosmetic finished products. These biocides include triacetin, undecylenic, resorcinol, and more; and can often be found in mouthwashes, toothpaste, shaving gels, and deodorants.

In the healthcare industry, biocides are used in low-level disinfection of stethoscopes, bedpans, blood-pressure cuffs as well as surfaces that are near patients such as floors, walls, tables, bed rails, and screens. The use of biocides is increasing in line with the efforts to prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, HAIs account for 1.7 million infections and 99,000 associated deaths every year.

Thus, the growing demand for biocides in personal care & healthcare industry is expected to boost the market growth.

Market Restraint:

  • Adverse Health Effects of Biocides

Biocides may have a series of adverse effects on human health, livestock, pets, as well as harmful environmental effects since they are meant to kill living organisms. Certain biocides are hazardous and classified as carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, and toxic for the environment. According to the Pesticide Action Network, approximately 30% of biocides are endocrine disruptive, persistent, mutagenic or reprotoxic, or carcinogenic. They pose a particular risk to pregnant women, unborn life, small children, or people with serious chronic illness. Health hazards caused by disinfectants or other dangerous biocides include effects on the skin, eyes, respiratory system, nervous system, and other organs.

As these biocides are harmful to humans and the environment, they are regulated by certain directives and regulations such as Biocidal Products Regulation, Directive 98/8/EC, REACH regulations, Biocidal Product Directive, among others.

Thus, toxicity associated with inhalation and exposure of biocides is a key restraining factor for the market growth.
